KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23, 2025 — The Malaysian government is in the final stages of formulating a comprehensive policy aimed at strengthening the country’s food security, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced this week.
The new policy is designed to ensure Malaysia’s food system remains resilient, sustainable, and self-sufficient amid rising global challenges, including climate change, supply chain disruptions, and increasing production costs. It will also align with national objectives under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to achieve long-term agricultural sustainability.

According to the Prime Minister, the initiative focuses on enhancing agro-food productivity, ensuring balanced nutrition, promoting food diplomacy, and supporting inclusive economic growth. It will also prioritise modernisation of the agricultural sector through technology adoption, innovation, and efficient governance.
The government is also preparing supporting legislation to ensure effective coordination among relevant ministries and agencies, establishing a more unified framework for food system management and policy implementation.
“This new policy will safeguard our people’s access to sufficient, nutritious, and affordable food while strengthening our farmers and agro-food players,” Anwar said, emphasising the importance of building resilience through sustainable practices.
The policy comes at a crucial time as Malaysia, like many nations, seeks to balance food production with environmental responsibility — paving the way for a more secure and sustainable food future for all Malaysians.
