KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13, 2025 – A new study has found that certain types of food may play a key role in enhancing happiness and mental well-being among older adults, shedding light on the powerful link between diet and emotional health.
According to a report published by Medical News Today, researchers analysed data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing to explore how food choices influence psychological well-being in adults over 50. The study examined the impact of four main food groups which are fruits, vegetables, fish, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on factors such as happiness, life satisfaction, and sense of purpose.

Findings revealed that individuals who consumed more fruits and vegetables reported significantly higher levels of eudemonic well-being as a measure of life purpose and fulfillment while those with higher fish intake were more likely to experience greater happiness. Even after adjusting for depressive symptoms and lifestyle factors, the connection between fruit, vegetables, and overall well-being remained strong.
While the study’s design means it cannot prove direct causation, researchers emphasized that the evidence reinforces the idea that a healthy, balanced diet rich in plant-based foods and omega-3 fats supports both physical and mental vitality in aging populations.
Experts suggest that promoting dietary habits emphasizing whole, nutrient-dense foods could help older adults lead more joyful, purposeful, and emotionally resilient lives proving that happiness, indeed, starts on the plate.
