Gen Z Drives Social Media Food Trends, Reshaping Restaurant Marketing

2 min read

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23, 2025 — A new report from Food & Beverage Magazine (FB101) highlights how 84% of Generation Z consumers are trying food trends they discover on social media, creating a powerful wave of influence that restaurants can no longer ignore.

According to the findings, TikTok leads the pack, with about 70% of Gen Z respondents citing it as their most trusted platform for food recommendations. Instagram and YouTube follow closely, each fostering their own communities of recipe creators, food critics, and viral taste-testers. For many in this demographic, food content is more than entertainment: it is a form of self-expression, a way to connect with peers, and a showcase of cultural identity.

Industry analysts say this rapid trend adoption is transforming the way restaurants plan menus and market themselves. Viral sensations from whipped coffee to inventive fusion dishes can now influence customer expectations almost overnight. “The window between a trend emerging and diners asking for it has never been shorter,” the report notes, urging restaurant owners to monitor social platforms and respond quickly.

The study recommends that foodservice operators embrace a social-first strategy, encouraging chefs and staff to create short-form videos, behind-the-scenes clips, and interactive challenges. By actively engaging with trends, restaurants can build brand awareness and foster a loyal following among younger diners.

Marketing experts add that staying authentic is key. Gen Z audiences value transparency and creativity, rewarding establishments that share their story, source ingredients responsibly, and invite customers into the process. As one analyst put it, “For this generation, the dining experience begins long before they set foot in the restaurant it starts the moment they hit play on a viral food video.”

With social media shaping the tastes of a generation, restaurants that adapt quickly and creatively are likely to capture the attention and appetites of tomorrow’s diners.
