AEON Malaysia Leads the Way with New Animal Welfare Policy
1 min read
Malaysian retail giant AEON Co. (M) Bhd has garnered praise for its progressive new animal health and welfare policy. This comprehensive policy prioritizes the “Five Freedoms” of animals across the company’s supply chain, encompassing egg-laying hens, cows, chickens, and fish.
Recognizing the ethical responsibility towards animal welfare, AEON’s policy mandates stricter standards for its animal protein suppliers. This includes phasing out cages and crates, limiting animal density within their environments, and providing suitable living conditions that adhere to expert-defined welfare guidelines. The company is actively collaborating with suppliers to implement these changes within the next 12-18 months.

This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring the well-being of farm animals within AEON’s supply chain, directly addressing the rising consumer demand for ethically sourced products.
“AEON Malaysia’s new policy sets a high bar for animal welfare standards,” stated Vilosha Sivaraman, Sustainability Program Manager at Lever Foundation, a key partner in developing the policy. “This demonstrates AEON’s leadership in prioritizing humane, sustainable, and safe food production practices, aligning with the growing ethical concerns of Malaysian consumers.”
Studies conducted by Universiti Putra Malaysia and published in the journal Animal Welfare highlight the strong support among Malaysians for improved farm animal welfare. AEON’s policy directly addresses this growing demand for ethical food production.
